1- What exactly is embossing? top

Embossing is simply using some form of a male and female mold in combination with heat, time and pressure to shape a garment in the form of the mold. A backing material will hold this shape in place for the life of the garment. The backing determines the wash-ability of the embossing. Naturally better quality materials help make the embossing last longer. Permaboss.com backing called “Bossback” lasts the life of the garment. In the sample kit, if you order it, you will get a t-shirt material embossed and you can test wash it as often as you like!

2- What materials can I emboss on? top

The fact is that with pneumatic/air operated machines you can only emboss in natural fibers and some leather. The backing is most important and will determine the life of the embossing but the air operated machines have limited capabilities due to lack of pressure (air 80 - 110 PSI versus 1400-3000 plus PSI for Permaboss NGE hydraulic machines).

Permaboss.com hydraulic embossing machines can emboss on any of the following:

  • Acetate Melton Polypropylene
    Acryl Neoprene Polyurethane
    Cotton Nylon Polyvinyl
    Fleece Polar Fleece Polyvinlyclorid
    Flock Paper PVC
    Foil Plastic Rubber
    Leather Polyacryl Silk
    Linen Polyamide Viscose
    Lycra Polyester Wool

and a host of other unique items. If any other equipment manufacture makes this claim, then get it in writing before you acquire the equipment.

3- Can I emboss on finished goods? top

Yes, Permaboss NGE equipment is specifically made and allows for finished goods- better than any other machine on the market in terms of room, clearance, function of the various embossing jigs that support your product etc. You can decorate finished good such as T-shirts, sweats, all jackets with or without linings, virtually leather products and even caps can be embossed with ease.

4- I heard that backing materials are the downfall of embossing is this true? top

Yes that was correct! Until recently there were really only three choices of backings, all have poor wash-ability, tend to have glue seepage and are not conducive to production due to the need to die cut or hand cut the backing.

Non-woven materials, low volume produced glue fleece backings and homemade glue solutions resulted in creating a poor reputation for this decoration. The time required to emboss using the old ways was always 45 seconds to one minute (This can scorch most cottons and fleeces and colored shirts wouldn’t change back to their original colors!)

BOSSBACKtm embossing backing is a unique breathable backing material that tears away like embroidery backings. The advantages are that on a microscopic level it’s a thin bubble like foam that fills the cavities and keep raised areas filled instead of hollow. It has incredible wash-ability and only requires 6-12 seconds in the embossing machine. This means higher production speeds and profit.

Best of all, NEW 2009 Bossback is now specifically formulated to be breathable, this is not the case with the older versions. We did this because of the heavy use in technical garments such as and dry-wicking, moisture management synthetic materials in sportswear!

Secondly is that you now only need ONE version for both leather AND textiles, this eliminates the cost of inventory you need to stock by 50%! Previously embossing backing came in 2 colors, 3 thicknesses and one for leather. Now with the heat activated memory foam, finally the backing is made here in North America so its 100% NAFTA friendly and incurs no duties or shipping costs from overseas so it’s more price competitive than ever!

5- What are the output capabilities of an NGE machine? top

Productivity ranges depending on the type of machine. All our machines require one operator. The rotary table rotates like helicopter blade so that the operator stays stationary and can use both hands while the other side gets the decoration applied in the press.

Every embossing regardless of the model of machine takes the same amount of seconds to decorate the same materials. So if you have a $25,000 machine or a $125,000 machine the embossing/debossing output is the exactly same.

Below is a sample chart of expected outputs in any environment.

Material Seconds / Piece Avg. Output /Hour Market Prices Wholesale Total $ / Hour
Die cutting of appliqués 1 * 350* $0.25-0.50 $ 87.50 +
Hot Foil Stamping 2 * 500 + 0.30-$1.00 $ 120.00 +
Vinyl Debossing    (finished goods) 3 *** 400 + $1.25-1.96 $ 500.00 +
Leather Labels 5 ** 600 + $0.50-$1.50 $ 300.00 +
Leather Debossing 6 400 + $0.50-$1.50 $ 200.00 +
Leather / Textile Embossing 13 200 + $2.86-$3.93 $ 572.00 +
One Color Flock (Textile or Leather) 15 120 + $0.99-$3.00 $ 118.80 +
Two Color Flock (Textile or Leather) 17 120 + $0.99-$3.50 $ 118.80 +
Finished Goods ie Leather Jackets 13*** 49 + Left Chest $4.00 $ 195.00 +
Finished Goods ie Leather Jackets 15*** 41 + Full Back $14.00 $ 574.00 +
* Here, the operators speed is the bottleneck, not the machine.
** Labels can sometimes be debossed 4 or more at a time. This would quadruple your output. We quoted one at a time. Often you will need to die cut the labels and this adds to the time as well. See above.
*** We suggest a $5.00-$7.00 handling charge in addition to the embossing. Time and effort is required to unpack leather jackets and repack them. We suggest you cover your time. Since the jacket is worth $150-$180 and sold for $250 -$400. The additional charge is proportionate to the value of the item. Why give away something free?

Caps

Output for caps can be 2 times more on NGE7 and 4 times more on NGE13. Caps in panel format are not required

6- R.O.I. Return On Investment, How can I profit from embossing? top

Currently embossing charges rival that of digitizing embroidery in the current market. The difference is that not everyone and his or her uncle can do it or knows where to get it!

An embossing mold will cost you $45 plus. It depends on the art. 90% of all left chest-embossing dies will cost you under $65 and you can get them in your hands in 48 hours!

Think of it this way, the higher the stitch count the more expensive the digitizing. So, if you are doing a high stitch count design or a full back embossing the setup cost is the same and the customer pays for this!

If your next sentence is that you don’t charge for setup because your competition doesn’t, your in luck! Why? Because your competition most likely doesn’t offer embossing and most likely they don’t know about permaboss and our die making abilities and they won’t be competing with you until they make the exact same purchase!

The mold or die is good for life, it is a one-time cost that your customer pays you and you have a markup on.

The cost of the backing (if required, certain materials will hold the embossing perfectly without backings due to the pressure we use) is about $7.50 per square yard and yields 32 left chest images.

Cost to emboss an image will be equipment, operator, electricity and $0.23 per piece. In other words, the going rate for a left sleeve or left chest embossing is $3.00-$5.00 depending on quantity. Let’s be ultra conservative and take a 144 piece order and give it away at $2.99 a hit. That represents 144 pieces X 12 seconds per piece or about 30 minutes of work.

144 pieces at $2.99 each is $430.56 per hour less your cost of backing (-$33.12) less your employee cost of $12/hr and you still net $385.44 for 30 minutes of work or $770.88 per hour. That’s already far more than the NGE7 costs per month!

7- What is the Market Demand? top

The most beautiful feature about embossing is that you have entered a near virgin market.

Embossing today is at the same stages embroidery was 10 or 15 years ago. Those who venture into the market today have a wide-open relative competition free environment/territory compared to embroidery, screen printing or direct to garment.

Today there is a massive saturation of screen printers and embroidery houses simply look in your yellow pages if you need a reminder. (FYI, over 21,000 screeners and over 16,000 embroidery companies and those are only the ones in the yellow pages!)

You can count on your printing or embroidery quote being shopped and compared! With embossing even if there were a way for us to penetrate 50% of the decoration and embroidery market the embossing market would still have virtually no direct competition for the next five-seven year window.

The downside is that customers will not call your phone off the hook, you need to make them aware of these new possibilities, in other words you will have to promote embossing in your area to other embroidery and screen printers who will want to use it but NOT buy a machine! It’s really simple actually.

You promote embossing by showing your samples to customers and helping them introduce the duplicated idea of multimedia, subtle, elegant tone on tone decorating, you do it by mailing samples to ASI reps, you do it by donating embossed items to charities, you do it by creating awareness and excitement.

It’s like everything else you do, you need to promote it. The best part is that you will have little if any competition as it is relatively new to most customers; virtually no direct competition means that the profit margins are still intact. You can see some of the work at  www.mboss.com or www.decdom.com for example!

The biggest bonus is that because your Permaboss embossing machine will offer 18 different decorations on over 79 materials you can sell to your customers and clients more than once per year.

Screen printers and embroidery can really only sell limited wearables, and very few companies buy wearables every month. They do, however, have a need for debossed cd cases, business card holders, hang tags, portfolios, briefcases, and a host of other business promotional products not to mention high profit leather garment that screen printers can't touch or embroidery houses are afraid of!

8- Is embossing easy to learn? top

All embossing techniques can be learned in one day, two days would allow you and your tech to get into production runs making samples for marketing and your confidence and ability would be sky high!

Within 15 minutes of hooking up the machine any operator can be embossing successfully.

Permaboss.com embossing machines all have touch screens with pictures so that there are no language or literacy issues to deal with. These machines also have more than 20 preset embossing programs, simply choose the material and you can emboss that material instantly. It is so easy that we literally have a 14 year old son of an employee making samples for our tradeshows and marketing kits safely.

He is able to emboss 300 plus pieces with 2 color screen-printing in less than 4 hours, that 75 two color pieces per hour! If a 14 year old can do production work casually and successfully then we are confident that any business person can accomplish better results.

9- Where do I get the molds/dies? top

Permaboss.com has all the service you require. We also will provide you with info on where to get dies from other sources so you can compare and see the difference for yourself, and depending where you live in the world, we will source a local die maker for you.

Technology has made it easier for companies like yours to have the option of creating their own molds in house on the spot in a few hours. It is as simple as taking your color image, converting it to gray scale then allowing the engraver to take over. The darker the grayscale the deeper the engraving, it is that simple.

Costs of the dies are now even cheaper and there is no need to depend on outside services.  Ideally if you are spending more than $700 a month in dies you should consider bringing it in house!

Many embossers use 3-15 molds per week! Now your customers can depend on you alone and you have two profit centers.

10- How much space is required? top

The NGE7 embossing machines is about half the size of a standard refrigerator. The NGE13 is like one of those larger double door refrigerators if that helps! Ideally one should allow a 10’ by 10’ (3m by 3m) space so that an ideal work flow pattern can be achieved.

11- Is embossing equipment reliable? top

Yes! Embossing equipment is incredibly reliable and is derived from other disciplines similar to that of tool and die making. The Permaboss.com presses are 100% designed by Austrians, Made in Canada and sold to the world.

There is a lifetime warranty on the frame and heaters specifically because we had issues with the import machines and didn’t appreciate the parts costs from the supplier.

All NGE models meet and exceed all international safety and electrical and occupational health & safety standards- we do not have a fraudulent UL sticker on the machine!!!!

In the event of a failure many components are available locally or from Permaboss.com in 24 hours. 92% of all technical issues related to Permaboss machine can be resolved in 10 minutes or less. Our machines include the latest in technology. For example every machine has an internet connection and/or if we have a newer update for the software you can do it by taking a supplied USB key from the machine to your PC, saving the file we sent you and plugging it back in and voila, it’s done!
